In August of 2019. Frank sees himself in a freshly published book from twenty years ago. He recalls Marie, with whom he had an affair prior to her relocation to the United States and subsequent disappearance from his life. Frank sets off in pursuit of her and finds himself in a terrified United States of America, mired in suspicion and political paranoia. He pursues Marie into the desert.
