American Friends
Francis Ashby, a senior don at Oxford University, is on vacation by himself in the Alps when he crosses paths with vacationing Americans Caroline and her companion Elinor, a growing Irish-American child that Caroline had adopted many years earlier. Ashby discovers that he enjoys being in their company, particularly Elinor's, and he notices that both of the women are attracted to him. When he gets back to Oxford, he is surprised to see that they showed up without prior notice. On the grounds of the college, women are not permitted at any time, let alone inside the buildings. In point of fact, the respectable Fellows look down on any relationship, no matter how innocuous it may be.
