Ella Peterson works at Susanswerphone, a telephone answering service, in the basement office. By adopting new identities for her clients, she adds some spice to her own mundane existence by eavesdropping on the lives of others. They include an unemployed Method actor, a dentist with musical aspirations, and author Jeffrey Moss, who is suffering from writer's block and needs a muse severely.
