Birdman of Alcatraz
Convict Robert Stroud faces life imprisonment in solitary confinement after killing a prison guard. Driven not quite mad by loneliness and despair, Stroud's life gains significance after he happens upon a baby sparrow from the practice yard and nurses it back. Despite using just a third grade education, Stroud goes on to develop into a renowned ornithologist and accomplishes a greater feeling of freedom and purpose than many people find in the world.
