Set in mid-fifties Australia, with communism on the rise and the country's farmlands overrun by rabbits, the film shows a long hot summer through the eyes and overactive imagination of nine-year-old Celia. Celia is torn between the brutal games and customs of childhood and the confusing world of adults after the death of her loving Grandmother. With terrible creatures prowling her nightmares at night, those imagined terrors mix by day with the banal harshness of the adult world, leading to sad and surprising outcomes.
