Ésimésac persuades the residents of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to work together on a community garden despite the fact that they barely have enough food to eat. By working the land jointly, each individual will increase their yield. Meanwhile, the prospect of a new railway line raises hopes for prosperity by promising to link Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to the rest of the globe. Huge blacksmith Riopel begins construction on the railway track and persuades the locals to contribute to his project rather than wasting time playing in the garden.
