Friend: Mara and Jo are best friends. It was when they were 14 years old that they met. Mara is reliable and Jo is stressed. Neither of their lives are stable, their jobs are uncertain, and their dates don't work out. Writing is something they do on the side, like so many people do in New York. When Jo needs Mara's help, Mara will do everything she can to help. Jo will be thinking about something else by the time Mara gets there. The story moves forward very slowly, focusing on a new example of the same pattern each time. Jo's troughs get deeper and Mara's anger grows. In time, Jo gets a job and Mara gets a baby girl. All of these things weaken their bond.
