Jim and Veronica, a young high-school music teacher, try to piece together their convoluted past and connected secrets. Jim's daughter is wrongfully convicted of misusing her position of responsibility over 17-year-old Clive when a hoax goes horribly wrong. Veronica is still certain she needs to be punished, but for much more serious crimes. Jim's sadness begins to interfere with his profession as a food inspector as he becomes confused and disturbed by Veronica's resistance. He possesses considerable power over small family-owned restaurants, and he is not afraid to use it.
