Harlan County U.S.A.
During a strike at the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky, in June of 1973, this footage captures the events. Because Eastover refused to sign the miners' contract (which they had agreed to when they joined with the United Mineworkers of America), they were forced to go on a year-long strike that saw violence between scabs and the picketing miners and their wives. To put the strike in context, director Barbara Kopple takes us back to the hardship of the miners and the UMWA's early days.
