The story takes place in Kyoto in the 13th century, where the Imperial Court is ruled by the clergy. Shijo was a peasant girl who had been sold into servitude by a wealthy daima. While living in isolation, she begins an affair with a State Councillor, and the son of a former Emperor. She becomes a nun and explores the country after realizing that she is nothing more than a pawn of the court.
