Charley Thompson, a youngster living with his single father, is offered a summer job as a horse trainer for Del Montgomery, who is also his mentor. Unable to bear the thought of letting an old racehorse named Lean on Pete die, Charley snatches him and sets out on an epic journey across what was then known as "New America" with him.
