Moffie
Based on André Carl van der Merwe's book, Moffie (a disparaging Afrikaans name for a gay man) tells the narrative of Nicholas van der Swart, who realizes he is unusual from a young age. Despite his best efforts, he cannot live up to the masculine image expected of him by his family and heritage. At the age of 19, he is drafted into the South African army, where he finds his every sensibility outraged by a system on the verge of collapse but yet in full force. This is a long overdue account about the emotional and physical hardship faced by countless young men during South Africa's border struggle against communism.
