Shanghai Grand
Gangsters abound in this lively, romantic crime drama set during WWII in Shanghai. Hsu Wen-Chiang, a Taiwanese patriot, washes up on a beach near Shanghai. He is taken in by Ting Lik, a kind beggar who is madly in love with Feng Ching-Ching, the daughter of a prominent gangster. Ting Lik rises quickly through the underworld ranks to become one of the city's most powerful gangsters. Hsu is by his side the entire time, using his own power to exact revenge on those who tried to kill him much earlier. The film's later focus is on the exploits of Feng, who had a long-ago relationship with Hsu while he was on the run in northern China. Back in the present, Hsu and Feng rekindle their love affair until Hsu discovers that Feng's father is one of his enemies and murders him. Feng is completely deranged as a result of his grief. Ting discovers the truth and swears vengeance on Hsu.
