The alien Illumidus Empire has conquered Earth after a long, brutal conflict. A captain in Earth's fleet, Harlock, refuses to join the Illumidus and even destroys his ship to stop them from using it. His solitary and bitter struggle against the Illumidus is supported by his comrades Tochiro, the space pirate Emereldas, and his beloved Miya.
