Oscar Grubman is surrounded by beautiful, sophisticated women. He is sensitive and compassionate, speaks French fluently, is a Voltaire fan, and believes that a woman's hands reveal the most about her. Oscar tells his best friend on the train home from Chauncey Academy for the Thanksgiving weekend that he has plans for this vacation—he will win the heart of his true love. However, there is one major issue: Oscar's true love is his stepmother Eve. Oscar is convinced that he would make a better husband for Eve than his work-obsessed father. He is defeated after failing to win Eve's heart. Oscar's path to his true love is further complicated by Diane, Eve's best friend, who offers him temporary comfort in an unconventional tryst one night while wearing Eve's borrowed perfumed scarf. Oscar fills a void in Diane's life. Diane serves as a distraction for Oscar, whose continued pursuit of Eve leads to an unexpected resolution.
