The 39 Steps
Richard Hannay, a mining engineer on leave from the African colonies, finds London socialite life to be excruciatingly boring. But when a secret agent bursts into his room and hands him a coded notebook containing information about the impending outbreak of World War I, he gets more than he bargained for. In no time, both German agents and British law are after him, ruthlessly coveting the Roman numerals code, which Hannay believes he must crack personally.
