The Cruel Sea
At the beginning of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is given the responsibility of leading a group of inexperienced officers and men who have recently completed their training aboard HMS Compass Rose. The winter seas make life difficult enough, but the men also have to toughen themselves up for the ordeal of rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks while rarely being able to strike back at their attackers. The skipper and his first officer have a strong connection with one another as a result of traumatic experiences that occur both at sea and on land.
