The Song of Bernadette
Bernadette, an adolescent peasant girl in 1858 France, has a vision of "a lovely lady" in the garbage dump where she is working. She never says that it is anything other than what it appears to be, but the town's residents all believe it to be the Virgin Mary. The pretentious government officials believe she is insane and try everything they can to suppress the girl and her supporters, while the church is completely opposed to the whole situation. However, as Bernadette's fame grows, the phenomena spreads throughout the community, affecting everyone and completely altering their lives as a consequence.
