Nate, Maddie's high school sweetheart, reconnects when Nate returns to their hometown to lecture at the hospital. Maddie, still hurt from their breakup, tries to avoid him. However, they eventually become friends, and Nate assists her in obtaining funding to expand her cupcake shop. Nate learns about a job opportunity in Boston just as Maddie and Nate rekindle their romance. Devastated, Maddie returns the promise ring he gave her years ago and prepares for the grand reopening of her shop.
