This romantic tragedy begins in 1957. A 20-year-old French auto mechanic, guy Foucher, has fallen inlove with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, a worker in her mother's chic but embattled umbrella shop. On the day before Guy is to leave in Algeria to get a excursion of struggle, he and Geneviève create love. She has to choose between taking an offer of marriage by the wealthy diamond merchant or looking forward to the reunite of Guy and becomes pregnant.
