The pressures of his job as a sports commentator and journalist became too much for Mitch to handle alone. He neglected his relationship with his fiancée and failed to make time for the things in life that are most important to a human being. Morrie was one of Mitch's college professors, and he was also a well-known scholar. Mitch was watching television one day when he noticed Morrie giving an interview in which he stated that he was dying of Lou Gehrig disease, also known as ALS.
