When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
Keiko, who everyone refers to as Mama, tells her life story: she's a hostess on the Ginza, 30 years old, and a widow. "I'm becoming older," she says as she recalls the terrible circle of her life: being upbeat around drunks, clothing and living well in order to project confidence, needing money for these expenses and for her demanding mother and brother, and realizing she is getting older. She has reached the age where she must make a decision between three options: seeking marriage (which will be difficult considering her soiled profession), being a kept lady, or borrowing money to open a bar of her own. Each path has its own set of risks, including the possibility of investors seeking a return on their loans. Her peaceful dignity draws the attention of men, but are they really who they claim to be? Whether or not she has options is unclear.
