When the last factory in a small Rust Belt town closes, quiet, responsible Allery Parkes steps up as an unlikely hero. Allery has always worked at the factory, and now that he is getting older, he can't figure out how to spend his life just sitting at home doing nothing. In spite of the advice and pleadings of his loving wife, Iola, he makes an unlikely friend with his charismatic neighbor Walter Brewer in order to bring the closed factory back to life.
