Brass
Brass is really just a British series made eventually and by Granada Television for ITV Channel 4.
Set a literary Lancashire mining town in the 1930s, in Utterley, 1970s proved to be a humor satirising the American supersoaps such as Dynasty and Dallas and the working-class period dramas of the 1970s. Unusually there was no laughter track and the humor deliberately kept dry, with convoluted wordplay and subtle comment on popular culture. Brass is northern English slang for"currency" as well as for"effrontery". The series also parodied the 1977 Granada TV dramatisation of all Dickens' crisis, which also starred Timothy West.
The collection, developed by John Stevenson and Julian Roach, has been put around two feuding families--the inferior, workingclass Fairchilds, that lived at a modest house leased along with the Hardacres. The Hardacre family had been headed by the ruthless self made business man Bradley, who espoused Thatcherite rhetoric while discovering harebrained schemes to make his companies more effective so he could sack workers, and his alcoholic wife Lady Patience. The head of this Fairchilds has been the stern"Red" Agnes, that spread militant socialist rhetoric around the Hardacre minemill and munitions factory, and her doltish, forelock-tugging husband George, who is dominated by his own wife and his own boss. Agnes was Bradley Hardacre's mistress.
