Denn Coil, Coil—A Circle of Children, is a Japanese science fiction anime TV show that takes place in a near future where semi-immersive augmented reality technology is just starting to become popular. The show takes place in the made-up city of Daikoku, which is a hotbed of augmented reality development and is building a virtual infrastructure for the whole city. It shows how a group of kids use augmented reality glasses to figure out the mysteries of a city that is half real and half online. They do this by using illegal software, techniques, and virtual pets to change the digital landscape. Denn Coil is the first series that Japanese animator Mitsuo Iso has directed. It has been in the works for over a decade. It first aired on May 12, 2007, on NHK Educational TV. Denn Coil was highly anticipated because of the animators who worked on it and the fact that it aired at an unusually high-profile time on TV.
