Tooru Honda, a 16-year-old high school student, decides to take matters into her own hands and move out...into a tent when a family tragedy completely upends her life and flips her world upside down. Unluckily for her, she chooses to build her new house on land that is privately owned by the shadowy Souma clan, and it isn't long until the clan's members learn the truth about her. However, Tooru quickly discovers when the family offers to take her in that the Soumas have a secret of their own: when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they transform into the animals that are associated with the Chinese Zodiac.
