Jack Roosevelt Robinson came from humble beginnings to become one of America's most revered men after crossing baseball's color line. Robinson, a fervent integrationist, utilized his enormous celebrity to speak out against discrimination on and off the field, infuriating fans, the press, and even teammates who had formerly praised him for "turning the other cheek." After baseball, he became a widely read newspaper writer, contentious political activist, and persistent supporter for civil rights, but as diabetes damaged his body and a new generation of leaders established a more aggressive course for the civil rights movement, he battled to remain relevant.
