Kino Warren, a haggard musician, begins a journey across the country and into an area known as "the territory" after hearing of his mentor's impending death. Until Kino arrives, he feels the mentor will not be killed. There are a number of people on his trail-both nasty and political-who are searching for the only known recording of what is regarded as the most important musical composition ever made, which was created by Kino's mentor and is in his hands, absolutely unknown to him.
