Russell Gates (David Strahairn) is a Vietnam veteran on death row for the murder of a police officer. Pam O'Brien (Sissy Spacek), his childhood sweetheart, is stunned to learn this and cannot believe he could commit such a crime. She writes to him, much to her husband Keith's chagrin, and becomes obsessed with the case, pursuing every avenue that may still be open to the doomed man. Her marriage and family suffer as a result of her trips to the prison.
