Brian, a lovable weirdo who lives alone in a Welsh valley and invents strange machines that rarely succeed, is a perfect example of this. Brian becomes inspired when he comes across a head from a discarded mannequin. After three days of work, he has created Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who picks up English from a dictionary and proves to be a wonderful, cheeky companion. However, Charles eventually achieves a degree of independence. Charles, who Brian has been keeping concealed in a little cottage, longs to explore the world beyond.
