However, she gives it all to her stepmother, which prompts her avaricious fiance to break off their engagement. Céline winds herself in the hospital after a series of abortive attempts to end her life by suicide. While there, she meets Genevieve, a nurse who has also battled depression in her life. Céline makes a slow but steady progress toward recovery while she is in her personal care, and the two women develop a close relationship.
