At the religiously divided and class-obsessed UK of the early 1920s, two decided young athletes train for the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell, a Christian made into Scottish missionaries from China, will not train or compete on the Sabbath and sees running part of his own worship of God's glory. Harold Abrahams overcomes antisemitism and class prejudice, but neglects his love.
