Everything Is Copy
Jacob Bernstein's hysterically amusing film is a tribute to his mother Nora Ephron: the Hollywood-raised daughter of screenwriters who grew up to be an outstanding reporter became piercingly funny essayist turned novelist/screenwriter/playwright/director. Onscreen, Ephron comes to life through her words; the recollections of her sisters, coworkers, previous spouses, and numerous friends; moments from her films; and, most importantly, her distinctive presence. Consider any given moment in which Ephron demonstrates her bright yet acerbic wit (for instance, this retort to a scolding talk show host— "Don't you have a soft spot for Julie Nixon? As you can see, I am not ") and it's hard to imagine she's been gone for three years. Everything Is Copy (Ephron's mother's credo) is a beautifully rendered but candid picture, as well as a striking snapshot of an earlier, livelier, bitchier, and funnier era in New York culture.
