Hospitalized police officer gets killed by bayonet. Martin Beck's investigative team soon discovered that the individual had routinely abused detainees and bystanders, but that any complaints had been dismissed because of the mistaken allegiance of his colleagues. Beck faces a time crunch because of the killer's erratic behavior. He must solve the case before more victims are injured.
