Original Cast Album: Company
Stephen Sondheim's musical "Company" premiered on Broadway in the spring of 1970, and the cast recording is traditionally done on the first Sunday after opening night. The now-legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker documented the production of the original cast recording, the back and forth between Sondheim and the performers, and the dynamic of attempting to record live performance. Elaine Stritch's performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch" serves as the film's climax. The show won six Tony Awards, including "Best Musical," and ran on Broadway for two years. A plan to create a series of "Original Cast Album" films never came to fruition.
