Portrait of Kaye
Kaye has always been afraid of going outside, so she has spent most of her life inside her parents' house. She finds comfort from her fears in the faces and lives of old movie stars, so she puts their pictures and pictures of her dead family members on the walls of her house. This makes a kaleidoscopic collage that mixes her real life with Hollywood fantasies. Portrait of Kaye is a bittersweet portrait of a woman finding her own identity while dealing with her mother's crude humor and her father's worries. The story is told from Kaye's point of view through freewheeling monologues. Now that she is 74 and has just lost her husband, her crush on a younger neighbor gives her a chance to explore personal and sexual freedoms that she has always kept hidden. Former next-door neighbor and music video director Ben Reed put together a unique and moving film about family, film, and what it means to be free. It was shot over the course of two years.
