The Battle of the River Plate
The Royal Navy fought a desperate battle to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles supplied in the early years of World War II. The numerous surface/commerce raiders that had snuck out of German waters just before war was declared posed a significant threat. They were primarily used to attack and sink merchant shipping and were supplied by axis cargo ships or tankers. They could and did strike anywhere and everywhere. This is the story of one such ship, the 'Admiral Graf Spee,' and how three lightly armed Royal Navy cruisers armed with 6 and 8 inch guns bravely challenged this powerful 'pocket battleship' armed with 11 inch guns.
