Frédéric Lansac, an artist and botanist, has a wild affair with Moira, but he dumps her for Anne. Moira disrupts Frédéric and Anne's wedding, causing Anne to fall into a bonfire. Frédéric, Anne, and his dumb dwarves lock themselves in his mansion. Anne becomes resentful and demanding. Frédéric informs everyone Anne has died, then secretly employs a nurse to care for her.
