Ivanhoe Martin arrives in Kingston, Jamaica, lands a recording contract because a reggae singer also, after some initial battles, looking for work. He records his first song,"The Harder They Come," but after having a bitter dispute with a manipulative manufacturer named Hilton, soon finds himself resorting to petty crime to be able to pay the invoices. He kills some cops deals marijuana and makes folk hero status. His album is topping the charts.
