The Island of Lies
January 2, 1921, in Galicia, northern Spain. The Santa Isabel, a steamer carrying almost 200 emigrants bound for Argentina, goes down off the coast of Sálvora Island. The cynical authorities hail three island ladies, Mara, Josefa, and Cipriana, for their heroic efforts in salvaging the shipwrecked; but, León, an inquisitive and persistent Argentine journalist, begins raising difficult issues.
