Susan Applegate decides to return to her hometown after a year and twenty-five jobs in New York. Susan disguises herself as a twelve-year-old and travels for half the price after realizing she does not have enough money for the train fare. She conceals herself in the compartment of Major Philip Kirby, a military school instructor who takes the "kid" under his wing after being apprehended by the conductors.
