The Reluctant Debutante
Welcome to London, Jimmy and Sheila Broadbent! Jane, Jimmy's daughter, is 17 years old. Jane is a descendant of Jimmy's first marriage to an American, and she has traveled to see her father and a stepmother she has never met. During her visit, Sheila proposes to Jane that she become a debutante, which Jane strongly opposes. Jane's apathy toward being put on the marriage market, Sheila's cousin Mabel Claremont's determined efforts to win wealthy David Fenner for her debutante daughter Clarissa, and Jane's attraction to David Parkson, an American drummer who plays in the orchestra at the coming-out balls, are among the difficulties.
