Though a childhood bout with polio left him reliant in an iron lung, Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes) asserts a lifetime career as a poet and journalist. A writing assignment dealing with sex and the disabled piques the curiosity of Mark, and he decides to research the possibility of experiencing gender himself. When his overtures toward a care giver scare away her, he books a scheduled appointment together with gender surrogate Cheryl Green (Helen Hunt) to reduce his virginity.
