The Trial
Corruption scandal involving former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, among others, led to her impeachment and removal from office in 2016. Maria Augusta Ramos covers Rousseff's trial from her defense team's perspective. The courtroom drama unfolds slowly, as the many parties' appearances convert the proceedings into theatre. Inside the courtroom, huge emotions are played out while lobbyists and supporters pace the halls. Meanwhile, outside, activists sing like a Greek chorus in front of Brasil's modernist government buildings. Only the primary character, Rousseff, keeps her distance.
