The main character, Mathilde (Paradis), is a sullen and parentless seventeen-year-old. Fortunately, her philosophy professor, François (Cremer), occurs to cross her path. He begins spending time with her every day, visiting her home to help her with her schoolwork and instructing her in the finer points of study. Mathilde gradually begins dropping indications about her attraction to François, 47, over the course of several months. He attempts to fight his feelings for her, but he eventually gives in. A strong love develops between them, but they can't let his wife (Mikal) or the school know about it.
